AI Search Report
Ranch & game fencing · Texas & Oklahoma · October 2026Who AI recommends for ranch and game fencing in Texas
Landowners now ask ChatGPT, Google, Perplexity and Claude who to hire. We asked those four engines 10 buyer questions about ranch, game, hog, water gap and solar fencing across Texas and Oklahoma, then recorded every contractor named in all 40 answers.

Summary
Key findings
71
different companies were recommended across 40 answers. Nearly half (34) were named only once.
6
companies were named by all four engines. 36 appeared on only one engine.
2of 10
questions got a different first pick from every engine: Hill Country high fence and solar farm perimeter fencing.
34/ 40
answers named the most-recommended contractor. The next one appeared in 10.
The market AI shows a landowner is very concentrated at the top and very scattered below it. One contractor appears in almost every answer. After that, the engines disagree. Each one builds its own shortlist, and most companies show up on one engine for one question and nowhere else.
For a fencing contractor, that means a single check of one engine says little. You can lead on Google and be missing on ChatGPT for the same question.
Section 1 · Method
How we ran the study
We wrote 10 questions the way a landowner types them, based on keyword research, Google autocomplete and Reddit threads where ranchers discuss fencing. They cover statewide “best contractor” searches, specialty work (hog fence, water gaps, solar perimeter) and local searches in East Texas, the Hill Country and Oklahoma.
Each question was asked once per engine in a fresh chat with web search on. No company names appeared in the questions. For every answer we recorded each company named, in order of appearance. The first company named is the one we call the engine's first pick.

Bar = answers naming the company. “Engines” = how many of the four named it at least once. “1st” = answers where it was named first.

| 11 | Lone Star Trapping | 4 | 3/4 | 1 |
Companies with the same count are listed alphabetically. All 71 companies and every answer are in the appendix.
Tejas Ranch & Game Fence, based in Athens, was named in 34 of 40 answers and first in 26. No other company came close. LE Fence and Texas Ranch Resources were the most consistent runners-up on game fence questions. BR-Fencing won the Tyler question on three engines. Outlaw Construction, Aim High Fence and Southern Fence Co. appeared on all four engines without often being named first.

The engines agreed completely on three questions: East Texas ranch fence, water gaps and the Athens search. On specialty and regional questions they split. For solar farm perimeter fencing, four engines gave four different first picks, ranging from commercial perimeter-fence firms to a ranch fence contractor. For the Hill Country, ChatGPT and Perplexity led with contractors based in the region.
Section 4
Local and specialty searches are wide open
Figure 3. Different companies named per question, across all four engines
More names means less agreement and more room for a new contractor to get in.
Figure 4. How often each of the 71 companies was named
Most companies appear once; very few are recommended consistently.
The Tyler cattle fence question drew 16 different companies across four engines, and no company was named by all four. The solar question drew 15. These are the searches where the shortlist is still unsettled. By contrast, “ranch fence contractor near Athens TX” produced only 6 names in total.
The engines also differ in how long their shortlists are. Perplexity named 5.5 companies per answer on average, Claude 4.8, ChatGPT 4.7 and Google AI Mode 4.0. A shorter list is harder to get onto.
Section 5
What the engines rely on
AI engines repeat what they can find and quote. The answers show where they found it.
| Contractors' own websites | Homepage claims were repeated almost word for word, including one company's “premier ranch fence contractor in Texas” line. Specific service pages for hog fence, water gaps and game fence were cited directly. |
|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Google AI Mode showed star ratings and review counts on nearly every recommendation, and drew most of its citations from company sites and Google's own business data. |
| Concrete, quotable figures | A hog-control company's line, “trapped over 100,000 feral hogs since 2015,” was repeated by two engines, and ChatGPT named that company first on the hog question. |
| Trade press and agencies | A Fencepost magazine feature on water gaps, Texas A&M feral hog guidance and a Texas PUC filing on wildlife-friendly solar fencing all appeared as sources. |
| Directories | Facebook, Yelp, BBB, ChamberofCommerce.com and review aggregators filled in local answers, including duplicate listings and conflicting founding dates. |
The same mechanism spreads errors. One well-recommended company was described as in business “more than two decades” in one answer and “nearly 30 years” in another from the same engine, because its own pages disagree. Its rating appeared as 5.0 stars on one engine and 4.5 on another.
Section 6
Patterns by type of search
Statewide “best” questions
Specialists win
For “best high game fence contractor in Texas” and “best water gap contractor,” engines most often cited service pages built around that exact service, with specifications and project detail.
“Near [town]” questions
Proximity wins
For Tyler, three engines led with a Tyler-based company over a better-known contractor 50 minutes away. Only Google AI Mode, which drew heavily on Google business profile data, picked the regional brand.
Regional questions
Local presence wins
For the Hill Country, engines led with Hill Country-based contractors such as Kerrville Fence and Gate. Statewide contractors without a regional page placed lower or not at all.
Specialty questions
The buyer's vocabulary wins
Solar and hog questions pulled in companies from outside ranch fencing: commercial fence firms, a solar contractor and hog trappers. Engines matched the buyer's terms, not the trade's.
Section 7
What a fencing contractor can do about it
- 01
Find out where you stand
Ask the major engines the questions your buyers ask, for your services and your towns. Results vary by engine, so check more than one.
- 02
Give each service and area its own page
A page for each service you want to be recommended for, and for each town or region you serve, with real projects, counties and specifications.
- 03
Publish numbers an engine can quote
Current price ranges per foot or per mile, miles of fence built, years in operation, project counts. Keep them consistent and dated.
- 04
Make your facts agree everywhere
Founding year, years in business, address and ratings should match across your site, Google Business Profile and directories. Merge duplicate listings.
- 05
Re-check regularly
Answers change from week to week. Track the same questions over time so you can see whether changes are working.

We'll ask the major AI engines the questions your customers ask and show you where you're named, where you're missing, and who is recommended instead.
Appendix
Method notes and full answer data
- Each question was asked once per engine on 2 October 2026. AI answers vary between runs, users and locations, so this is a snapshot of one day, not a fixed ranking.
- ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Perplexity answers were collected by hand in fresh sessions. Claude answers used its web search tool.
- Order is the order in which companies first appear in the answer text. Where an engine said “if I had to pick one” about a company mentioned later, we still recorded order of appearance.
- Spelling variants of the same company were merged (for example “J4 Fence Services” and “J4 Fencing & Services”). Not every company named is a fence contractor; we counted every business the engine recommended.
- The question set leans toward East Texas, including Athens and Tyler searches, so East Texas contractors had more chances to appear. A different set of towns would produce a different leaderboard.
- Companies are named only as they appeared in the engines' answers. Inclusion is not an endorsement.
